Who are the Gorillaz?

The Gorillaz are a british cartoon band made in 1998 in response to the superficialness of MTV. Damon Albarn, a previouse member of the band Blur, and Jamie Hewlett, creator of Tank Girl, were watching MTV when Jamie remarked how If you watch MTV for too long, it's a bit like hell – there's nothing of substance there. So we got this idea for a virtual band, something that would be a comment on that. Albarn also added that it was the begging of the boy-band era where record labels would call together different artists and manufacture the sound they wanted. This was the beginning of the boy band sort of explosion... and it just felt so manufactured. And we were like, well let's make a manufactured band but make it kind of interesting

And thus Gorillaz were born.

Originally they were called "Gorilla" but added the "z" later. The name is a pun on how a group of gorilla'z are called a band and a reference to both Jamie and Damon being bornon year of the monkey.
